Cotton is one of the most common fabrics in the world, due to its versatility. Cotton fabric is strong, breathable, natural and renewable. Yet, growing cotton crops require a lot of water. Conventional cotton production is chemically intensive as pesticides and synthetic fertilizers are often used, contaminating our planet’s soil and water. These chemicals can also be harmful to consumers when the fabric is made into garments and household products like towels and bedsheets.
Due to its demand, cotton also has a massive social impact. It is estimated that 100 million rural households around the world rely on cotton production for their livelihoods. Ensuring that cotton is grown with the least harm to the environment, and a fair trading environment for people in the supply chain is very important.

WHY COTTON
Cotton is one of the best fabrics to use for baby clothing because it is strong and breathable.
Sometimes customers ask us whether we could consider synthetic fibres in our product range for its durability. The main reason why we recommend avoiding synthetic fibres for baby clothing is because babies have very sensitive skin and synthetic fibres are normally not breathable. If any type of moist gets trapped against the skin this can quickly cause rashes and irritation.
For that reason, we choose to use 100% cotton in all of our baby clothing ranges, as well as our baby towels because it meets both important requirements of being strong and breathable.
In addition, cotton is also a natural and renewable source, meaning that we are not taking finite resources from our environment.
Having said that, cotton crops are very vulnerable to pests. To make sure that crops will yield revenue, farmers often have to resort to using genetically modified cotton seeds, as well as applying pesticides and other chemicals to protect the crops.
In addition, when cotton fabric is processed for manufacturing, the washing and dyeing process often adds more chemicals to the fabric. These checmicals are not only harmful to the earth, but also to our baby’s skin. That is why, we choose to use organically grown cotton for our cotton range. To assure that products are truly organic, there are several reputable certifications that validate the level of chemicals used during the cotton production process is safe for babies. GOTS certification is one of them.
